Who has been listening to The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe?

Writers who were not taught logic in school — evidently a great many — will think that 'to beg a question' means 'to give rise to a question.' In that they are like the multitude of writers who have appropriated technical but dimly understood language. A parameter, for example, is 'a constant, with variable values, used as a referent for determining other variables.' If you are a mathematician, that definition from Webster's New World College Dictionary probably means something to you. If you are not a mathematician, you are probably using parameter to mean a boundary or limit or guideline, or perhaps nothing in particular. People do write this way. Some even talk this way. Eventually, loose applications of technical terms to different contexts find their way into the dictionary, some embedding themselves in the language. That is fine. But in the interval, anyone who wishes to write precisely will be cautious.

Yes, she was wearing her new helmet that she won at the school safety week. However, it had not been adjusted properly and it flew off her head as she flew off the bike. I think the poison-ivy was a soft landing because the only thing really hurt was her pride.
Thomas and Veronica went on a 14 mile bike ride yesterday. Guess they had lots of fun.

Begging the question (or petitio principii) is a logical fallacy in which the proposition to be proved is assumed implicitly or explicitly in the premises.

The phrase begging the question, or some variant thereof, is sometimes used to mean "a question that begs to be asked, usually because it is obvious to all." Using the term in this way, although common, is considered incorrect. This incorrect usage is the result of confusion over the translation of petitio principii, which literally translates as "assuming the starting point." However, petitio also means begging; as a result, the phrase "'this begs the question' seems to mean that this begs us - asks us earnestly, entreats us - to raise and consider the question."

That begs the question: What kind of workers rights exist in Russia to begin with? Perhaps, Putin could begin there?

Was Daniela wearing a helmet? Because I had a friend get hit by a car that wasn't wearing a helmet, and that was pretty gross.

Hopefully Daniela will not be experiencing poison ivy after her fall into the ditch. We went bike riding with Aunt Veronica on the Montour Trail yesterday. It was beautiful until that little mishap.

it was a present to me for graduation or birthday, or both. The flower contact paper was to cover all the stickers and sticker remains on it when I got it

When I bought it from Sarah, she said Eric had purchased it. Note also, the price she charged me was higher than the price Eric purchased it for.

I don't remember buying a fridge. I think my roommate had one. But I could be forgetting....I am almost 40, you know.

if that fridge is really the same one, it was bought used for $39 in 1988 in front of LAR in Urbana. Didn't have flowers on it when I bought it though.

Taod, I was thinking I would probably drop them off at your place, anyway. I'm glad you're on board with it.

Mom, Edgardo said you are wrong...we made a little place for the kids in the basement (not even finished yet) and they think it is so cool (like Lauren's Basement) that they hang out there even when we are not down there. Or maybe they realized that ALL the toys have migrated down there with them, but mostly they play cards. Daniela is teaching Thomas how to play spit.

You're going skiing with the Youngs next year? Why don't I know about these things?

V

You can keep the ski equipment and use it when you come visit me and Sarah on some slope between NY and Pit or in WV when we meet up with the Youngs to go skiing next year.

Yeah, it needs a V-brake. What does it have then, a cantilever brake? I would have just gotten a fixed gear bike, but there's too many hills here for that.

And by gotten I mean stolen.

It appears I did not secure the RelhoLite form against spammers, and it has been protected purely through obfuscation... that will be corrected when I get back to BZN.

That fridge is more likely 20 years old. I think erico purchased it.

The bicycle is ~14 years old, and last I saw did not have V-brakes.

erico

what about the stuff you didn't steal?

I'm doing an inventory of things to take back with me to Illinois. Being that the university is reimbursing for the move, more is being moved than probably should be. Anyone interested in the following speak up now or it will be left in the Evergreen State:

-an old (15 yrs?) mini-fridge with wood paneling and covered in flower contact paper.
-a pair of rental skis, size 9.5 women's ski boots, and 2 poles(not matching)
-1 trek mountain bike needing new gears and V-break.

More to come....
