IF there is no hammer, the nail sticking out is simply a hazard. IF there is no grease, the squeaky wheel is just annoying. assigned

So anyways, I'm in the middle of an eight hour meeting in San Mateo... two more scheduled for the next two days, and an evening meet to boot. One of my co-workers just moved down here and claimed he saw a whale from inside his house yesterday. I told him there were cows thirty feet from my front door, but we was not impressed. unknown
SAK_ID #320192HRELHO IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS                                     6/2/09 9:26 PM
Basic understanding of how a nail and hammer work explains why the nail sticks out, and it is this information that is necessary for the analogy to hold. Not all things that stick out are hammered in (eg, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" implies that sticking out provides benefits). Thus the content of why they stick out is relevant within the analogy. The implication with the hammer and nail analogy is that the student that excels would be knocked down to the level of a student that does not excel. Is that at all true? Has the student been reduced to conforming with the other students, or has the student been separated even more so from the others? “Don't waste good iron for nails or good men for soldiers” That quote doesn't have anything to do with anything other than similar words. unknown
SAK_ID #320202HRELHO ANALOGY-FAILURE-DETECTOR-FAILURE                                     6/2/09 8:49 PM
The nail and hammer quote provides no explanation as to why the nail sticks out: failure of goal, non-conformity, holding up a picture. “If there is anything the nonconformist hates worse than a conformist, it's another nonconformist who doesn't conform to the prevailing standard of nonconformity.” - Bill Vaughn unknown

The student sticks out above the others because they have excelled at their goals. The nail sticks out above the others because it failed to achieve its goal. unknown

This is from the laptop I just repaired with a new hard drive and loaded with the operating system Ubuntu. It was very easy. Merel got the wireless working and loaded Skype while I was playing video games. That made it even easier. unknown

Actually, I was just going to make a post to see if anyone wanted to road-trip with me on my trip back to Illinois. Of course, I don't know when that is yet. End of July perhaps? unknown
