Well I'm back up on the computer and seem to have solved the problem. I had forgotten one important thing I'd changed in the last month, the new router Edgardo got for me, but that was no problem to hook back up to. I also have to redownload the Malware and hopefully the update will help prevent any more problems. complete

The AV security is slightly different from AV8 -- so be aware of anything that looks like AVG, the symbols are very similar. Anyway I couldn't update the MalwareBytes program and it's 15 days out of date the one you download. So I am going with a system restore as Eric suggested. I haven't done anything important in the last month so hopefully this will get me back to a time before the virus. assigned

Did you manage to run update for the MalwareBytes program? That might help. Also, in safe-mode you can search for "AV8" folders and/or files and delete those. assigned

Well the Malware didn't remove it. I think it's the AV security virus on the machine and I found it online, but I don't know that I want to repair it myself. unknown

I've got the scan going. Hopefully it'll help. I had my backup disk connected when all of this happened. I guess I should do a scan of it too once I get the computer working again. unknown

  I think so.
I think this is disaster week. My pipe to the outside faucet burst. I just had a shut-off installed inside last year and forgot to shut it off for the winter. Good thing it was there though so I could shut it off today.

If you can't get to internet, you can try downloading the antivirus on your other computer and transferring the install file via USB disk. Just don't use a USB disk you value too much. I just got a pop-up here which closed my browser and said "AV8 had found suspicious activity". I killed the firefox process instead of hitting "ok". AV8 is a "fraudulent antivirus" virus, trying to look like AVG (the good antivirus) a bit I guess. Is that what yours is? unknown

After multiple tries I got into safe mode with network access, unfortunately I didn't have network access in it. Have to get other things done today so I'm giving up for now. unknown

Mom, I would recommend booting into safe mode (I think that's hold F8 while the computer boots). That should allow you to access websites in a very basic mode. Then open a browser and download the antivirus "malware bytes" from malwarebytes.org. Try running that - you may have to boot back into normal mode, but try it in safe first. If it gets blocked by the virus, you can rename the mbam.exe to mbam2.exe and try again. Let me know how that works for you. unknown

Those paper balloons do look like great fun to light and send off. My other computer seems to have a virulent virus. I can't open anything except mozilla on it and if I try to go to a web site I get a message telling me that the site poses a serious threat. unknown

I just got back from MI and hanging out with Kim. It was the best New Year's Day I've ever had. I highly recommend massages to start off the new year. On an unrelated note, Luke Field stressed that we book our hotel rooms for the wedding as early as possible. There is some other events going on that weekend, and a few of the hotels are already booked. (Their website is on the back of the Save-The-Date on the bottom left-hand corner)[http://www.mywedding.com/lukeandleanne/]. I will probably be booking mine later this week. unknown
